Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding and jaw clenching, may be caused by a variety of factors, including anxiety, stress, misaligned teeth or jaws, trauma, a health disorder, or as part of a child’s normal growth and development.
While the occasional grinding of teeth usually doesn’t cause any harm, serious damage can be done when your patient grinds his or her teeth regularly. This damage may include chipping, fractures in the teeth, painful headaches and migraines, chronic facial pain, jaw injury, and excessively worn tooth enamel.
Dr. Jason C. Campbell will teach you methods to help prevent and treat bruxism during your courses at our institute. Common methods of prevention include stress management and relaxation exercises. These methods may involve exercise or relaxing with music. In cases where prevention is not enough, you may consider recommending a night guard to protect your patients’ teeth.
